Experience a luxurious stay in what is possibly one of New Zealand's oldest buildings, while visiting historic Kohukohu
Kohukohu Villa is a historically significant home, located in Kohukohu, on the Northern bank of the beautiful Hokianga Harbour. It was built circa 1840 - 1860 as the office for the Kauri mill that was adjacent.
It has a lively and varied history including being (supposedly) a billiards room, a reading room, a working-mens' club and even a police station with a jail in the basement!
Originally two simple rooms, it has been extended over the early part of last century with multiple rooms and a conservatory added. Much of its rustic past has been preserved and exposed to tell the story of this grand old building.
The west wing of the current building has been developed for accommodation, with two queen rooms available for up to 4 guests, with a shared bathroom and private media room. In keeping with its rustic themed character and past, the rooms have been furnished with individual antique pieces from a by-gone era & you will not be disappointed with the unique setting. The rest of the villa is still being painstakingly restored by the owner/operators.
Enjoy a peaceful & tranquil environment sitting out on either of two outdoor decks to take in the birdsong and lush Hokianga bush surrounds. A stay in the villa will be truly memorable, and restorative.
Historic Kohukohu Villa
NZ Herald Travel editor Stephanie Holmes :- "Other accommodation worth checking out in town is the Historic Kohukohu Villa, where hosts Dee & Sean will treat you like a VIP. This property dates back to the 1840's and its past uses are rumoured to include a mill office, a billiards room, a reading room, workingmans club and even a police station. Now, there are two rooms available for B&B accommodation, offering a luxurious yet homely stay. Meals are available and you absolutely should partake - Dee is a wonderful host and the multi-course dinner we enjoyed, accompanied by local Waitapu wines, was an absolute delight. Hours of great food and even better conversation meant we left feeling like old friends." Dec 2020
